Mooi and the Goose

Pet shops and shelters will tell you the same thing: most people looking for a pet cat have the same criteria.

Kitten
In good health
Short hair
Male

On this list, Mooi was zero for four. She was a lame, long haired, four year old female cat suffering from human neglect and blessed with a litter of her own kittens. By the time I saw her at a kill-free shelter,  she had already been priced for quick turnover.

Pound for pound, there is no animal on Earth more dangerous than a cat, but here too Mooi was well below standard. With both back paws crippled by a birth defect, it took real effort for her to hop up on my lap. She may have weighed six pounds soaking wet -- fully grown she still looked like a kitten. You will never find a cat more gentle or more friendly.

Mooi liked fresh air, so most days I let her outside for a few minutes of supervised play. One day she rounded a blind corner and spotted a large goose in the far lawn. This led to a brief play in three parts, one for each perspective.

I saw a bird far larger than my pet, but it took me a moment to think what that might mean. Mooi, equally friendly and fearless, bounced forward as fast as her crippled back paws would permit.  Fearing the worst, I started running after her. The goose, suddenly aware of being seen, leaped into the air and flew off, leaving us watching as it winged its way to a safer location.

I watched the goose fly off into the distance. Mooi sat back and did the same, probably wondering what all the fuss was about.

There is always an opportunity to learn from those around us, and from time to time and recall the lesson I learned from my gentle little pet. Don't be a goose. Never be afraid to make a friend.

Virtual Accountability

On April 30, I set a goal for myself to not drink diet cola for the month of May. I posted this decision on Facebook as a way of creating a virtual support group. Today, June 1, I owe that group a status report. Bottom line: I stayed away from all carbonated drinks the entire month. My only drink was water. No cola, no coffee, no caffeine.

Mostly, I did this by saying "not this time" whenever the option came up. Many times it was easy, a few times it was hard. For me, hardest was at a movie where dinner was served during the movie. It would have been so easy...

My conclusion: save the willpower for the few times it is needed. Look for alternatives. Believe it is possible, and try using social media as a virtual support group.

I am Love! Open the Door!

Knock-knock…
Who’s there?
It’s me!
Me who?
It’s me, Love!

I came to bring you Hope and Dreams, I came to bring you Support and Care, I came to bring you Kindness and Desire to Live! I bring you sunshine even when it’s snowing. I bring you a cup of tea in the morning.

You can talk to me or be silent, I still know what you feel. I brought you flowers and strawberries, I brought you mountains and forests, I brought you Understanding. I brought you a blue boundless sky!

Open the door, it’s me, Love! If something bad may happen with me, believe me, I’ll survive. You know why? Because I am strong and because I’ll reside in your heart. Because you can’t live without me, because you cannot dream without me, because you can’t create without me.

If you fall I’ll help you to get up! When you succeed I’ll celebrate your success with you! Even when nobody is around, I’ll always be with you! I am Love!

I hope the Valentine’s Day of 2013 will be filled with Happiness, smiles, and flowers. I hope the Valentine’s Day of 2013 will be filled with Love!

Thank you All!
